NOTE: As another example, Final Cut Pro X 10.0 projects are no longer readable by today’s Final Cut. However, if we had simply exported our FCP 7 projects as XML, we could access them today via Premiere or DaVinci Resolve or today’s Final Cut Pro. Once FCP 7 stopped working, we lost access to ALL our old edits. Only FCP 7 could open FCP 7 project files. One of the big, painful, lessons we learned with the demise of Final Cut Pro 7 was that it stored our edits in a proprietary format.

Project files are proprietary, XML files are designed for transfer and archiving. This tutorial was written by GroundWorks Consultant Stephen Ratkovich. For long-term archiving of any media project, I strongly recommend you export an XML version of every project you want to save – regardless of whether you use Adobe Premiere Pro or Apple Final Cut Pro.

You now have a high-quality video file made from your Final Cut Pro X project that is ready for archiving and/or distribution! Again, be sure to take all of your files with you when you leave GroundWorks. If you want your video to automatically open up in QuickTime after exporting, check the “Open with Application” box.Select “SD Video Sharing.” Your video will automatically be cropped to 640×480. In the “Video Sharing Services” folder under the “Apple” folder.Click Share > Export Using Compressor Settings….This will be a compressed MOV version of your project that is recommended for nearly all means of distribution, including being uploaded to YouTube or any other video sharing website. In the save dialog box, you can name your video and choose a save location where your video will be exported.Select “Do Nothing” to not have your video automatically open after exporting.Select “Open with Compressor” to have your video automatically load into Compressor to further compress your video after exporting.Select “Open with QuickTime Player” to have your video open up automatically in QuickTime Player when your edited footage has finished exporting.Select one of the Role options to export the different types of Roles you defined in your project.Select “Video Only” or “Audio Only” to export just one or the other.Select “Video and Audio” to export both video and audio. You can scrub through your edited footage by moving your mouse over the video preview.

You can later use this MOV for burning to DVD using iDVD (Mac) or Windows DVD Maker (Windows). If your project settings are set up correctly, this will be the highest-quality video possible for your project.
